The basis for the award is the creation of a greenhouse gas balance sheet. This determines an organisation’s CO2 emissions. The GHG Protocol (https://ghgprotocol.org) or a comparable solution is used for this purpose. Here, the emissions are primarily taken into account from Scope 1, Scope 2 and partially from Scope 3. Organisations should look to reduce emissions or source an alternative with zero emissions.’ Emissions that are not avoided or ‘incurred’ are offset in climate protection projects. Climate neutrality is therefore achieved by avoiding ‘reducing’ and offsetting greenhouse gas emissions.

Grundlage der Auszeichnung ist die Erstellung einer Treibhausgasbilanz. Darin werden Co2 Emissionen einer Organisation ermittelt. Dazu dient z.B. das GHG Protocol (https://ghgprotocol.org) oder eine vergleichbare Lösung. Hier werden die Emissionen vorwiegende aus den Scope 1, Scope 2 und teilweise aus dem Scope 3 berücksichtigt. Organisationen sollten grundsätzlich auf die Vermeidung von Emissionen achten.
Die nicht vermiedenen Emissionen, werden in sogenannten Klimaschutzprojekten kompensiert. Die Klimaneutralität wird somit durch die Vermeidung und die Kompensation von Treibhausgasemissionen erreicht.
Bei einer Kompensation von 100 % der berechneten Emissionen erfolgt die Bewertung „sehr gut“, bei einer Kompensation von 90% bis 99,9 % der berechneten Emissionen erfolgt die Bewertung „gut“.
